The central theme of the Conference is "Enlargement, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean". Therefore, it encompasses and reflects wider European concerns about the North-South relations within the new European context, the enlargement and regional integration, globalization and competitiveness, regional and urban growth and development in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Furthermore it refers to several issues on the European regional development agenda such as environmental policy and coastal areas, island policy, regional development, accessibility, transport networks, urban policy, rural development etc.
