22nd ERSA/4th PREPARE Summer Institute

"Regional Growth Models" - Advances in Theory, Methodology and Empirical Analysis

The European Regional Science Association is offering the opportunity to participate in the 22nd ERSA / 4th PREPARE Summer Institute that will be held 3rd – July 12th 2009 in Volos, Greece. The event is funded by the European Union (Marie Curie Program).

GOAL

The goal of the 22nd ERSA / 4th PREPARE Summer Institute is to provide PhD-students and young researchers with

  • advanced training in theory, methodology and empirical analysis of regional growth models,
  • an opportunity to present and discuss their research,
  • skills and knowledge to advance their careers as researchers.

FORMAT

In the summer institute you can expect ten highly focused and intense days of advanced training, student presentations and discussion, and discussion of career strategies. Two excursions will complete the unique experience of this summer institute.

THEME

This summer School will be focused on Regional Growth Models. This topic constitutes one of the core themes in Regional Economics and has attracted the attention of the scientific community for its theoretical foundations, empirical applications and policy implications. In a format of combined lectures and hands-on training the School will provide education by top-level experts in the following areas:

  • A comparative analysis of regional growth models
  • Regional growth models and empirical evidence
  • Advanced methods in regional growth modelling
  • Hands-on experience in constructing a growth model

As of current planning, the following persons have agreed to lecture at the summer institute:

LANGUAGE

The summer institute will be held entirely in English.

TIME TABLE

Participants are expected to arrive at the venue of the summer institute in Volos, Greece, on Friday 3rd for the opening event at 7pm. The summer institute will close with a graduation dinner held on Sunday, July 12th in the evening. Participants are expected to be available for the full period of the summer institute. As part of the summer institute, every participant is expected to give a short presentation of his/her research.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

ERSA is looking for participants with the following characteristics:

  • doctoral / PhD students or junior researchers with less than 10 years experience;
  • research experience in one or more of the topics of the summer institute;
  • serious intentions for entering a research career;
  • who are either citizens of an EU (or associated) country or students at an EU university.

Among participants fulfilling these criteria preference will be given to women and participants from Central and East-European countries.

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS

Participants will be selected by the local organizing committee primarily according to the above mentioned criteria. In addition to these criteria, the organizers will look for an international mix of participants. The number of participants is limited to 30.

COSTS

The costs of the programme and of local accommodation of participants will be covered by funding from the European Union (Marie Curie Program). Also, the travel expenses of participants (cheapest opportunity) will be covered up to a limit of €300.

HOW TO APPLY?

Doctoral / PhD-students and young researchers who want to participate in the summer institute should submit their application in electronic form via http://www-sre.wu-wien.ac.at/ersa/prepare/application.html

The application has to include the following information:

  • name, gender,
  • address,
  • date of birth,
  • citizenship,
  • date of diploma giving access to doctoral studies in the country in which the diploma was obtained,
  • current status and affiliation,
  • a scientific CV,
  • a short description of previous and current research work,
  • a short description of career plans,
  • name and email address of doctoral / PhD supervisor,
  • name and address of two researchers who are willing to write a letter of recommendation (may include the doctoral / PhD supervisor),
  • title and abstract of the intended presentation.
