Deadline for abstracts: 31 May 2010

When new industries emerge, initial locations are usually unevenly distributed across space and differ regarding their participation in the growth of the industry during its life cycle. Looking at Eastern Germany for example, a number of regions were successful in attracting significant production capacities in photovoltaic industry although West German regions showed better preconditions regarding regional knowledge base and capital endowment. The conference therefore aims to develop deeper insights in the evolution of location patterns of new (high tech) industries, e.g. photovoltaic and other new industries, and tries to contribute to the discussion on differences in regional opportunities to benefit as locations of new industries. We therefore search for papers which focus on explaining determinants for the location of new industries.

We plan conference proceedings (special edition of a refereed journal or an edited volume) of selected papers presented at the conference. We invite contributions from different disciplines, which focus on one or more of the following issues:

• Conditions under which regions participate in the growth of new industries;
• Determinants of the evolution of location patterns of new industries;
• Public policies to promote the emergence and regional growth in new industries;
• The role of inter-firm networks in the emergence of new industries;
• The role of industrial clusters in emergence of new industries to submit abstracts until May 31, 2010 by email at mbt@iwh-halle.de or chh@iwh-halle.de.
